The online experience is migrating to a smaller screen, driven by mobile devices and the desire among users for constant connectivity—to be always ‘on’ and ‘on-the-go’. Smartphones are prompting this shift, fueling greater Internet usage overall.

Smartphone Nation, the first report in this year's Netpop | Pocket series, investigates the impact of smartphones on Internet usage in China. It also examines the impact of privacy concerns and distrust on perceptions of social brands. Findings reveal that spend more time online overall (18% more) and still prefer doing those online activities on a desktop or laptop, yet continue to show evidence that Internet use is shifting to smaller screens.

This report includes:

  • Impact of smartphones on time spent online
  • Device preference for over 30 general online activities
  • Device preference for over 10 social media activities
  • Use, age and satisfaction with major mobile phone operating systems
