Background
What is Netpop?
Netpop is a tracking study of the global broadband population. We provide a framework for understanding broadband consumers—individuals who define the modern consumer market.
What kinds of products does Netpop offer?
We offer business professionals tools to make more informed marketing and product development decisions. These tools exist in the form of graphs, guides, reports, and custom analyses—and cover the key areas and trends in Internet usage.
Why Netpop?
With the glut of customer data generated by the Internet—from traffic logs to blogs and product reviews—it is increasingly difficult for marketers to gain a holistic picture of their customers. The age-old risk of not being able to “see the forest through trees” is higher today than ever. Netpop provides much-needed context.
Who is Netpop for?
Netpop is geared toward professionals—including interactive marketers and analysts, business consultants, brand and product marketers, media and advertising professionals, and researchers—who want to gain a deeper understanding of online consumers.
How can the research be applied?
Think of Netpop research as the ultimate source for a broader or more holistic picture of your online customer. Netpop research can be appended to transactional data, and used to develop more effective marketing and advertising strategies. It can also guide business development decisions, identifying new features or target segments. Finally, it can give agencies and consulting firms a competitive edge.
Who is Media-Screen?
Media-Screen LLC is a strategic market research and consulting firm based in San Francisco. Since 1997, Media-Screen has offered research products and services focused on the online consumer, establishing our unique domain expertise and creating industry-accepted metrics for understanding the modern consumer market.
Research
What is the Netpop research methodology?
Netpop is based on an online survey of over 4,000 respondents per country (13 years of age or older) who are members of online market research panels. To qualify, respondents must access the Internet via a high-speed or broadband connection (any connection greater than 56 kilobits per second). Respondents are selected using a proprietary sampling process to ensure that participants entering the survey are representative of the Internet population in the target country based on age and gender.2
How does your proprietary Start Rate™ sampling methodology improve results?
Our sampling methodology improves the quality of online sample recruiting by monitoring the profile of people taking a survey. Response rates vary across demographic groups, which our process helps to control. Additionally, this method obviates the need for weighting or setting hard quotas—enabling us to use online survey research to define the actual profile of target market rather than guessing or relying or secondary sources that may not accurately reflect usage among the broadband population.
Why broadband users?
Over 70 percent of Internet users in the United States connect via a broadband connection, and that percentage has increased at 60% CAGR since 2000. To understand the broadband user of today is to understand the modern consumer marketplace of tomorrow.
What countries do you cover?
We fielded in Netpop in the United States in 2006 and 2007. We added China in 2007. more countries will be added in the coming months and years.
What is the margin of error (MoE)?
Based on a randomly chosen sample of this size (n=4000+), we have 95 percent confidence that the results are statistically accurate to within 1.55 percent of the entire broadband population, if the entire population had been polled.
How do I suggest a question to be included?
Please let us know if there is a question or coverage area that you feel should be included in future waves of Netpop. Send your remarks to research@netpopresearch.com.
The data doesn’t match up with other data I’ve seen. Why?
It can be difficult to compare research. Sampling methods and question phrasing can have an impact on results. It is rarely the case that one data set is “right” and another “wrong.” Rather, different research tells us different things. That stated, we aim to make Netpop research as accurate and comprehensive as possible.
